Meditate Yourself To Health

March 15, 2017

Unless you've been living under a rock (or far away from social media) then you've probably heard about meditation and it's benefits a lot in the past few years.

Meditation has been around for thousands of years, but in today's stress-riddled society it can be argued that regular practice is more important that ever. Meditation and mindfulness work to give your brain a break from the constant barrage of information, stress, thoughts, and simply thinking that is generally non-stop in our internal monologues.

Simply google 'benefits of meditation' and you can see that there are thousands of articles, based on scientific research, preaching the benefits of regular, daily meditation for your wellbeing. Today I thought we'd cover a few of the key benefits that daily meditation can have on your health.

1. Tune In

Firstly, meditation helps you really tune in to your body and what you're feeling. Aches and pains that you may not take precedent in your thoughts during your day-to-day activities can't be ignored, and can show where your body is out of whack.

2. Reduce Stress

Stress is one of the leading causes of many ailments, from physical aches and pains, to digestive trouble, headaches and more. Constant stress from having a million thoughts and things to do going through your mind will not only show itself physically in your body, but also make recovering from any injuries or illness even slower. Meditation not only takes away that stress during the act, but it helps you learn to better respond to stressful situations in the future, thus reducing future stress. It's a snowball effect - the less you let stress affect you, the less you stress, and so on.

3. Relieve Pain

In a study conducted on 15 healthy volunteers, pretty amazing responses to meditation and pain were had when exposed to pain by heat following meditation sessions:

"This is the first study to show that only a little over an hour of meditation training can dramatically reduce both the experience of pain and pain-related brain activation. (…) We found a big effect – about a 40 percent reduction in pain intensity and a 57 percent reduction in pain unpleasantness. Meditation produced a greater reduction in pain than even morphine or other pain-relieving drugs, which typically reduce pain ratings by about 25 percent.” - Fadel Zeidan, Ph.D., lead author of the study.

4. Reduce Blood Pressure

Clinical research studies have proven many times that regular meditation over a period of time can reduce blood pressure, which in turn can help decrease the amount of medication someone may need.

Theses are only 4 reasons - there are SO MANY positives out there for why you should start a daily meditation routine. And don't worry if you're a bit baffled at first as to how to meditate, as there are heaps of resources online and plenty of phone apps. My favourite apps are Smiling Mind and Calm - both of which take you through guided meditations of varying lengths and styles.

So take this as a sign and start meditating daily now!
