How To Be Better At Life

January 24, 2017

Physiotherapy is about the body, about helping you feel better, fixing injuries, getting you to realise just how good your body is meant to feel! Right? Well yes, but the body and mind and emotional body all go hand in hand, they’re connected and something affecting one area can affect another. For e.g. if you pent up anger and anxiety you can experience headaches, muscle pain and stiffness as a result. If you exude negativity about yourself and others, your body will exude that behaviour and manifest it in terms of pain and body issues. So to truly fix a body and help it get to its best state possible, we have to touch on all these areas. Today’s blog is touching on the side of health that a lot of us often speak of in private for fear of coming across too ‘hippy’. Pfft, let’s get our hippy on…..

For those of you who know me, you know I’m constantly working on self-development. On being the best physio, friend, boss, partner, sister etc possible. You’ll also know that it’s an ongoing, never-ending, constantly challenging situation to find oneself in. (which is the best part about it). How good is growth. Anyway, I digress. I want to share the latest book I’ve been reading with you, mainly because the basic concept of it is So. Simple and easy for anyone to implement, no matter your level of hippy-ness.

The book is called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and is based on the premise that if you follow these four guidelines then you are on the road to becoming your best self (that’s my interpretation anyway).

1. BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

WHAT!? SOO simple. How easy is it to spend our days speaking negatively of others? Of others? To what purpose? If we all focused on not letting anything negative leave our lips, not only would the world be a happier place but we’d be so much happier within ourselves. (= less stress = happier bodies!)

2. DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Knowledge. Bomb. DROPPED

3. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

This one is my favourite. How many times have you started an argument with a partner because you ‘assumed’ that they meant one thing when they didn’t. Or you ‘assumed’ that a friend was cross with you when really they just had a bad day. Communication is KEY in life!

4. ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse and regret.

Your best is going to change from moment to moment!! Oh how simple and how true! How good do you feel when you do your best when you tackle a task? Fabulous, am I right? So why NOT do your best with everything you approach in life? !

And that’s it. Simple right? It may come across a bit left field. But look at it this way.  If you follow the above four agreements you will be happier with yourself, you will feel GOOD internally. Good internally means that you are more likely to want to go for that walk on the beach. More likely to put in the effort to make a really good, healthy meal. More likely to spend good quality time with your friends. Your body will be thanking you for all these things plus will be less stressed, holding onto less negative tension and overall be one step closer to feeling as good as we have the potential to feel.

In my opinion, that’s a pretty alright start to getting better at this thing called life.
