You Snooze You Lose!

May 26, 2016

Simon's Handy Hints for getting you out of bed in the morning without pressing the snooze button:

1. Set two alarms 2-3 minutes apart

If the first one isn’t enough to get you up and going and you ignore it, then the second one within a few minutes will. The traditional 10-minute snooze time is enough to fall back into a deeper sleep but when you have only 2-3 minutes between alarms you should be more alert and roused.

2. Place the alarm at other side of the room

There is nothing more annoying than that gimmicky, repetitive noise that is you alarm, first thing in the morning. Even if it is your favourite song, it will soon become your most hated song because it is that annoying. So based on this premise, if you are forced to get out of bed and walk to the other side of the room to switch it off then you are pretty much up and going for the day without even thinking about it!

3. Get work gear and everything needed for the day ready the night before

The will allow you to set an alarm at the latest possibly time and maximise sleep because essentially you just need to get up, tick a few boxes and go as opposed to having to sort out what to wear, what you need for the day etc. Also by being able to set the latest possible alarm you know you can’t afford to press snooze.

4. Have your goal written next to your alarm or with your alarm

What is the reason that you get up at that time and go to work or to a training session? Is it because you want to be able to go on that holiday in a few months or trying to get a personal best result in your training or want to win that competition next week? Generally people need reminding of their goals to stay motivated, and having that goal pop up and associated with the alarm is a great way to ensure you get up and go for the day without snoozing.

5. Think of the positives

A sunrise, being the first one out in the line up for a surf and having the waves to yourself, first one in the water at the pool and a lane alone or having the gym to yourself with all the equipment available. These are a just a few of the many positives I can think of that would get me out of bed with my first alarm.
