Do you find yourself getting headaches often, or a certain dull look to your skin? How about your energy – do you find you get a slump mid-afternoon, and try to fix it by having a snack? Did you know that all of these things might actually be a result of you not drinking enough water?


The human body is about 70% water (your brain is actually about 85% water!), and every cell needs water to function. Therefore it makes sense that if you’re not drinking enough water, then your body isn’t going to be functioning at its highest level.

  1. Increase your energy, and decrease fatigue
    You may be getting 8 hours of sleep at night, but if you’re not hydrated then you will still be feeling tired, or not as energised as you should.

  2. Promote weight loss
    More often than not, people mistake the first signs of thirst for hunger. So before you reach for that snack, have a big glass of water and wait 10 minutes. If you’re still hungry, have the snack. If not then you were simply thirsty. Water also has zero calories, so drink away!

  3. Aids in digestion & flushes out toxins
    Water helps digest food which can prevent constipation, and it also helps flush out waste through urination and sweat.

  4. Headache’s be gone
    If you find you are getting headaches fairly often, then there is a high likelihood that they are caused by dehydration, so keeping up your intake can help relieve current headaches, and keep future ones at bay

  5. Keep skin looking fresh
    That’s right – dehydration plays a massive role in making skin look more tired and aged than it should.


So how much water should we be drinking every day?

While most people say 8 cups (2 litres) is best, that differs for everyone. The best way to make sure your're drinking enough is to:

  1. Track your thirst - if you’re rarely feeling thirsty, you’re on the right track.

  2. Check your urine – well hydrated urine is colourless or at most a pale yellow

If you are exercising, pregnant or unwell, then you will need to drink more water than normal as you are likely losing it at a faster rate than normal.


Can I drink too much water?

In rare cases, yes. This is mainly for people who drink too much and are unable to excrete it in time – it can cause a dilution of the electrolyte content of the blood. This condition, hyponatremia, is more common in endurance athletes who drink more fluids (source). If you think you may be drinking too much water, it’s always best to check with a doctor.
