Are you struggling with your motivation to stay fit? Or perhaps you're trying to eat healthier and find yourself reaching for a chocolate bar at 3pm (we've all been there!). Making changes to your routine and lifestyle can be hard, especially when starting out. Not only are you trying to break an old habit and replace it with a new one, you're relying solely on your willpower to keep you from caving in to whatever bad habit you're trying to cut.
But there is a way to help you stick to your goals! Get a friend on board.
Yep, it really is that simple. If you have someone else to help keep you accountable, someone who is also doing the same challenge as you or cutting out the same bad habit, then you're much more likely to stick to your plan and reach your goals.
When your alarm goes off for that 5am bootcamp, if you're just going by yourself then it's very easy to justify rolling over and going back to sleep - hey, you're the only one who you're slacking off on! But if you have a friend meeting you there, who is relying on you to come, then that gives you some external motivation. No longer is it only about you - by not going, you're also letting down your friend who is relying on you.
Having an accountability friend also means that when you hit your goal or reach a milestone, you have someone to celebrate with who knows what it took for you to reach this point. They saw the sweat and hard work that you put in, because they were right there with you, reaching for the same goals.
Lastly, by having an accountability friend you're not only helping yourself, but you're helping your friend. It really is a win-win - you both push each other to go that extra round, to say no to that extra drink at the party, and you both succeed together.
Do you have an accountability buddy? Reach out to your friends, colleagues or that person you see in your group class at the same time every morning, and you'll be surprised as to who also needs someone to keep them accountable!
